THE FOUNDER STORY

From Pain to Purpose: The Journey of George Onyango

George Onyango was born into a world of struggle. In his family, even one full meal a day was a privilege, not a promise. Basic education, a dream cherished by many children, was nearly out of reach—uniforms and school fees were luxuries his family simply could not afford. Though gifted with intelligence and determination, George’s future was constantly threatened by poverty. He was offered a chance to join a prestigious national school, but the opportunity slipped through his fingers due to financial hardship. Instead, he attended a local day school—an option that, while more affordable, still brought immense strain. Even day school fees seemed insurmountable at times. But love came in the form of his elder sister.

In a quiet act of extraordinary sacrifice, she took a job as a house help to support her younger brother’s education. When her salary couldn’t cover all the costs, George joined her. They worked side by side—siblings in service, bonded by love and hope—just to keep him in school. It was a life of labor and humility, yet together, they persevered. George completed his education not with ease, but with relentless grit.

After finishing school, George moved to Nairobi, full of ambition but with little else. With no network or financial cushion, he began work as a kua (porter) at Wakulima Market, carrying heavy loads for traders. Slowly, through integrity and tireless effort, he earned their trust. His work ethic paved the way for a promotion to salesman—a turning point that marked the beginning of a modest but promising business journey. But in 2012, just as his life began to take shape, the unthinkable happened. The sister who had once given everything for him—his protector, his provider, his guiding light—was murdered in an act of unspeakable domestic violence. Her husband attacked her with a machete before ending his own life by drowning in a river. In a matter of moments, five children were left orphaned and broken.

Grief tore through George’s heart—but love compelled him to act. He took in his sister’s children and became their father, their comfort, their hope. And from that personal tragedy, something remarkable was born.
In 2014, George founded Promise Giving Children’s Home—not just as a tribute to his sister, but as a commitment to all children who suffer in silence and despair. Drawing from his own life, George began rescuing children from the streets of Nairobi, many from Wakulima Market where he once worked. He offered them shelter, food, schooling, and—most importantly—unconditional love.

Today, Promise Giving Children’s Home is more than a shelter. It is a sanctuary. It is where forgotten children find belonging. Where broken hearts begin to heal. Where one man’s pain became a purpose that continues to transform lives.
George Onyango’s story is one of unimaginable sorrow—but also of extraordinary grace. It is a reminder that love can rise from loss, and that hope, when nurtured, can light the way for generations.
